Olkaria V Project

The Olkaria geothermal field is located in Hells Gate National Park in the Kenya Rift Valley, North West of Nairobi, It has an estimated potential of about 1,200MW. The field is divided into five areas (East, South East, North East, West and Domes), on which several Power Plants are installed.

A total Power of about 460MW is being developed (or under commissioning) and operated by Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) and about 128MW are developed and operated by an Independent Power Producer (IPP). Therefore, due to the estimated potential, the Olkaria Field has the capability to double the installed capacity.

The geothermal power project Implementation is part of a medium-term strategy, adopted by KenGen, to increase geothermal power by 2018, expanding the national energy production capacity. Consistently with the continued economic growth, KenGen intends to increase its geothermal power production capacity by an additional 140MW, installing a new power plant named Olkaria V in the Olkaria Domes geothermal area.

In order to ensure timely and successful achievement of this objective, in December 2014 the Kengen has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) Advert for Engineering Consulting Services; and, after a prequalification phase, in January 2015 has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for Owner Engineering Consultancy Services for the development of the Olkaria V Geothermal Power Plant Project.

The consortium of Steam Srl and Gesto Energia SA was awarded the Contract for consultancy services for the design and implementation of the 140MW Olkaria V Geothermal Project. The project started in June 2015 and has a total duration of 60 months, including the post-construction services, 40 months until the commissioning.
